Rhinoplasty - Cosmetic nose surgery

The cosmetic surgery of the nose means that the look of the nose is formed within an operation. The big, long, with a bump, broad, angular or partly asymmetric nose can be beautified with an operation. In the majority of cases the problem is bequeathed (but this occurs only at the age of 16-18) or by injuries, like the break of the bone of the nose. An operation can only be done after the age of 18; the upper border of the age doesn’t exist.

Counselling interview before the operation

A serious consultation is very important before the operation. The surgeon has to know exactly the patient’s needs and imaginations and the patient has to know what changes can be done on the nose. Unfortunately not every nose can be operated, because the anatomic factors confine the possibilities. The planning with the computer can be very helpful. First the surgeon takes some pictures of you, with which he later able to work on the computer, so that the patient can imagine his/her nose a little bit better.

The essentials of the operation

The essential of the operation is the change of the bone or of the cartilage of the nose. There are two kinds of the cosmetic nose surgery: Total nose surgery: by breaking the bone, it is possible to create a smaller, thinner nose. The cartilage is minimized, the angels are fitted to each other and if it is necessary the ala of the nose can be also reduced. Partial nose surgery: is unusual and only one of the aboves is made. The nose surgery is usually made with an inner cut through the opening of the nose (closed technique) and therefore there will be no scar. But if the alas of the nose should be minimized as well, then there are going to be little scars on their place. Nowadays the open technique is used more often, with which it is possible to assure accurate results. In case of the open technique there is a 3-4mm cut between the alas of the nose, the so called Columella, made that is barely recognizable in the future. If the patient has problems with the respiration through the nose, the surgeon can also correct within the cosmetic nose surgery the nasal septum, with a similar good result. If both problems are solved with one operation, the patient doesn’t have to expose him-/herself two operations and therefore two healing processes.

How is the operation done?

Usually the operation is done in a general anaesthesia. The necessary examinations (laboratory) can also be done in our clinic. The operation takes for about 1-3 hours. After the operation you get some tampons in your nose and a cast on the bridge. The first night our patients have to stay at our clinic, but the can leave the next day, after the tampons are removed. Normally there is no pain, but there can be discomfort because of the tampons, because you’re not able to breath through your nose but through your mouth.

Interesting facts after the operation

You have to wear the cast for one week and you should relax in the meantime. The effusions beneath the eyes disappear after two weeks, but you can fast this up by cooling them (4-6 times daily for 20-25 minutes). In the first week you should relax in a sitting position and you mustn’t clean your nose, twist it, carry heavy things, eat acerb foods and drink alcohol. To make the respiration easy you can use nose sprays or nose crèmes. The first check up is after one week, when the cast is removed. The removing of the stitches is usually not needed, because they break down themselves. Important: After the removal of the cast advancement is visible, but the total form only after 2-3 months. After the operation it is forbidden to go a solarium or to sunbath for 1 ½ months and you have to protect your nose of injuries. You also shouldn’t wear sunglasses. The next check up would then be after 2-3 months.

Possible side effects:

A disadvantageous change after 1-2 months after the operation (is rare). But actually this is the own reaction of the organism and not a side effect, which can also happen after the removal of the cast through the creation of the scar in 5-6% of the cases. But afterwards this can be removed by a small correction. Bleeding or inflammation: occurs in 1-2% of the cases, it can be inhibited with tighter tampons or antibiotics. The loosening of ichors through the openings of the nose for weeks (very rare) The numbness on the bridge or on the tip of the nose is rare and can be better without any help after a few months. The narrowing of the nasal cavity (very rare) The die off of the cartilage (very rare), can deform the nose and this can mean a new operation.
