Information about the facelift (rhytidectomy) Facelift surgery

The skin of our face loses its tautness; it begins to hang and receives folds by the age. This is the natural ageing process of the skin, to which the atony of the layers deep under the skin of the face (like mimic muscle, rolls of fat) belongs as well. The classic facelift: This means the total lift of the skin on the face and the removal of the surplus skin. The cut begins by the temples, runs before and behind the ears and ends in the region of the nape piled with hair. This is a bigger operative intervention and the wound healing lasts longer. In general the operation is accomplished at the age of 50 to 70. Mini facelift: The cut runs only before the ears and it affects particularly the chin and the upper part of the neck. This is a smaller operative intervention, can be accomplished already from the age of 40, goes together with less side-effects and the wound healing is shorter. Forehead lifting: With the aid of an endoscope little cuts will be done in this case and a good result can be achieved with it. In case of the facelift there is no upper age limit, but the prerequisite of the operation is a general good state of health. Certain diseases (for instance high blood pressure, diabetes) risk the success of the operation and side-effects can be formed easily. The smoking can be dangerous and therefore the operation can be accomplished only if the patient pinches the cigarettes in the weeks and months before the intervention. Generally the operation is accomplished in local anaesthesia, but it is feasible in general anaesthesia as well. Before the operation a laboratory test and possibly also an ECG are necessary. In case of the local anaesthesia it is possible to go home after a few hours rest. In case of the general anaesthesia the patient has to spend one night in our clinic. After the operation thin vacuum tubes will be led in the wound in order to drain the trickling ichors. The tubes will be removed after 24-48 hours. After the intervention the patient has to wear a press band for 2 days (only the face remains free) and a looser band for a few weeks. In the first days swelling can occur on the face or little discolouring and bloodshot can occur around the eyes. After the 7.-8. day the band isn’t needful any more and the patient can wash his/her hair, but the removal of the last stitches happens only after the 10.-14. day. During this time (about two weeks) it is recommended to relax at home, the patient has to come back for control 2-3 times and for the switch of the band. After the operation the patient should sleep with the head somewhat higher for 2-3 days and eat dishes which can be bitten easily. In the first week bending, lifting of heavy things and doing sports are forbidden. Further the followings are forbidden as well: sun bath, solarium, hot meals seasoned with curry and alcohol. The colouring of the hair and the make up are permitted after three weeks, sun bath and solarium after 6-8 weeks.

Possible side effects:

In case of the plastic facelift the serious side-effects are scarce and the less serious problems can be treated with appropriate after-treatments. These can be the followings: Secondary bleeding (4-5%) Sense irritations of the skin are rare and disappear after a few months. Die back of the skin behind the ears (less than 1 %) Inflammation, swelling and oedemas are very rare. Diseased scarring / keloid and loss of hair in the cut deviation can be corrected with an after-treatment. Injury of the facial muscle is very rare (0,1 %), the uncomfortable asymmetry of the facial muscle can be the follow up of it.
